Having a senior parent who lives across state lines can be a difficult situation to deal with. While it’s possible to check in on them once every few weeks, over time it is not a feasible option. You could pitch the idea for your parents to move closer to you, however more often than not it will be met with resistance as it is difficult for seniors to relocate and adjust to new surroundings and lifestyles. In this scenario, the best option is for you to move closer to them. Here are some tips on how to make your relocation process simple and affordable.

Deciding When to Move

Before dedicating considerable time, effort, and money towards relocation, ascertain whether there is an actual need for you to move near your parents. A simple method for finding out is to focus on their ability to handle ADLs (activities of daily living) independently. As reported by Better Health While Aging, common ADLs include:

  • Eating
  • Getting dressed
  • Bathing
  • Ambulating
  • Grooming

During your visits, pay close attention to how they behave and manage the household. The inability to perform ADLs such as grooming, eating, and walking can easily be observed. Additionally, try to notice any major change in their behavior. For instance, if earlier they were proactive and would frequently go outside to socialize and now refrain from venturing outdoors, it could be due to deterioration of health.

Based on your experience if you feel they require constant care, find a good time to have a conversation with them regarding you moving closer. Involving them in the decision is important as they can start preparing for the change as well.

Researching Housing Options

Before investing in any property in the new location, opt to get a rental for a few months and learn about the local market, amenities, and neighborhoods. Additionally, connect with your lender and obtain pre-approval for a mortgage, through which you’ll know exactly how much mortgage you are eligible for. Additionally, having a pre-approval is a great asset for convincing sellers to choose you over other buyers.

If your parent’s home is in a rundown state, it’s best to sell it and invest the funds towards buying a new home that can accommodate the whole family. Furthermore, your new home should include features that make it senior-friendly, such as:

  • Centralized electrical controls
  • Slip-resistant flooring (a must in bathrooms)
  • First-floor bedrooms
  • Ample outdoor space

Make provisions to add these features if they don’t come with the home.

If one of your parents needs specialized care, search for assisted living. At assisted living, they will receive the required physical therapy, medications, and 24/7 assistance. Living close will allow you to visit them frequently, and provide care for your other parent as they adjust to the change as well.

Assisting Your Parents

Living closer or with your parents allows you to greatly improve their quality of life by assisting in the following areas:

  • Home Maintenance: Whether it be small DIY fixes or hiring professionals for major problems, you can take up the responsibility to keep the house in order. Also, you can take the guidance from your parents in DIY projects, allowing them to contribute as well.
  • Medical: This involves taking doctor appointments, driving them to clinics, helping them manage medication, and being available in case of emergencies.
  • ADLs: As mentioned before, you can identify areas where your parents require assistance and help them overcome difficulties. For instance, motivate them to come for a walk outside once in a while, which will help them stay mobile and active. However, if they aren’t comfortable accepting your assistance in activities such as feeding and bathing, look to hire a professional with expertise in senior caregiving.

Living close to your parents will also significantly reduce the stress and uncertainty you need to deal with compared to living far.

Throughout the process of relocation, it’s important to have constant communication with your parents. Moving closer is bound to be a major change for everyone involved. But it will have a positive impact on your parent’s health, safety, and wellbeing.
